Residential: St. Pauls Care Home

What we did:

The project included the design,  remodelling and refurbishment of the existing St. Paul’s Care Home and Day Centre to create 13 self-contained flats and a shared common living area for the residents and the adjoining Waddles Court Sheltered Housing Complex. The project achieved the Considerate Constructor Beyond Compliance Certificate.

Client:

Carmarthenshire County Council

Works completed:

  • Design, remodel and refurbishment of internal areas
  • Upgrade of electrics, heating, fire alarms and careline systems
  • Installation of new kitchens, bathrooms, windows and doors
  • Internal decoration, including flooring
  • Asbestos removal
  • External insulated wall render, renewal of roof covering and installation of PV systems
  • Renewal of paths

Key things we had to consider:

  • The existing roof configuration at the facility did present a unique challenge to incorporating new requirements into an existing structure. Our design team, in particular the structural engineer, was able to overcome the problems and install the essential services required
  • We were also able to design out some of the future maintenance requirements in a building of this nature and strategically place inspection hatches without encroaching into the living areas of the individual flats

Building standards we worked to:

  • Carmarthenshire Homes Standard
  • LABC (Local Authority Building Control)

Community benefits from the project:

  • Improved living environment for the residents
  • Lower energy costs for the residents
