Education: Ysgol Bro Pedr

What we did:

The project involved the construction of an extension to the SEN unit & re-roofing of existing building at Canolfan y Bont, Ysgol Bro Pedr. The project achieved the Considerate Constructor Beyond Compliance Certificate.

Client:

Ceredigion County Council (South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework)

Works completed:

  • Diversion of the main sewer to avoid the new extension
  • Demolition of existing portacabin
  • Traditional construction of single-storey special needs unit with sloping ceilings, a cut roof and exposed metsec beams
  • Installation of aluminium windows
  • Kitchen fit-out
  • Extension of M&E services from the existing facility
  • Floor finishes and decoration
  • External works included re-roofing the existing building, new paths, walls, fencing, railings and a DDA ramp.

Key things we had to consider:

  • We carried out the works while Ysgol Bro Pedr remained operational. Some of the children who attended the SEN unit found the noisier activities challenging. To alleviate this, we carried out the majority of these works during the holidays, before the school day started or after the pupils had gone home.
  • We also took care to make sure none of the works affected the day-to-day running of the school.
  • These arrangements were subject to regular monitoring and review to ensure their continued effectiveness with all stakeholders.

Building standards we worked to:

  • LABC (Local Authority Building Control)

Community benefits from the building:

  • Improved learning environment for the children
