Education: Small Animal Teaching Unit

What we did:

Demolition of two existing faculty buildings and construction of a purpose built state of the art teaching unit which included classrooms, animal handling, washing/grooming rooms, specialist reptile enclosures, aquariums, staff room and administration room. The project won the Carmarthenshire LABC Best Educational Building 2012 and was a finalist in the Welsh LABC Best Educational Building of the Year. The project achieved the Considerate Constructor Beyond Compliance Certificate.

Works completed:

  • Demolition of the existing buildings, removal of asbestos containing materials, recycling other material.
  • Construction of the new building, including M&E, utilities, car parking and groundworks.

Key things we had to consider:

  • Agreement and adoption of effective health, safety and communication arrangements as the campus remained operational during the contract period
  • Protecting bats and birds when demolishing the existing buildings
  • Managing a phased vacation of the existing buildings

  • LABC (Local Authority Building Control)
